Buteyko Breathing:
What is it and can it help me?

Firstly, how do we pronounce Buteyko?  Boo-Tay-co (co like co-ordinate or co-educate)

Professor Konstantyn Buteyko was born in Ukraine, as a medical doctor he noticed that the patients who were most unwell, breathed fastest.

He wondered if the speed at which a person breathes could possibly relate to their lifespan.

He spent his life experimenting, trialling different ways of slowing the breath down and scientifically analysing why fast breathing is so detrimental to our health.

He discovered that slowing down breathing rate and volume will improve health and not only that, but also will significantly reduce and even eliminate symptoms that cause illness.

His techniques require no prior knowledge or ability, and thankfully they require no special or expensive equipment. His techniques tap into the way our body was designed to function.

Buteyko Breathing will help you if you suffer with Asthma, Anxiety, Hyperventilation Syndrome, snoring, sleep apnoea, coughing or breathlessness.

If you cannot breathe through your nose comfortably all day and night then you will be breathing irritants in through your mouth directly into your lungs. Our lungs are designed to accept air which has been inhaled through the nose. This air will have been warmed, moistened, filtered and partially sterilised. Air flowing straight through the mouth will be cold, dry, dusty, it may be polluted or contain pollen and pathogens. All of these contaminants irritate your lung tissue.

Buteyko techniques teach how to breathe comfortably through your nose no matter how long you have been breathing through your mouth.

A little bit of science.

When we breathe quickly during a panic attack, Asthma attack or when we are anxious, our brain thinks we are in physical danger. It sends messages to our Sympathetic Nervous System to produce stress hormones cortisol or adrenaline, which raise our heart rate and blood pressure, help us to speed up and move fast away from the danger.

When we breathe slowly we activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System, releasing hormones which calm our body down, allowing us to relax and repose, rest and digest.

If you would like to learn how to breathe slowly enough to stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system and breathe small enough volumes to flood your brain, heart and muscles with oxygen; then you will enjoy the teaching on a Buteyko Breathing course.

Over the duration of the course you will notice improvements in your energy levels, quality of sleep, breathlessness and concentration.

You will be taught how to breathe to avoid panic attacks, Asthma attacks, eliminate snoring and how to manage a blocked nose during the Winter months.
